Hysterectomy refers to the removal of uterus by surgical process .It can be done through laparoscopically in which fibreoptic instruments inserted through abdomen . Incision made for laparoscopic surgery is much smaller than used in abdominal surgery . Also the recovery from major abdominal surgery is longer than laparoscopic surgery for which reason latter is preferred in modern times .
In laparoscopic hysterectomy the entire uterus may be removed along with ovaries and fallopian tubes or only the uterus may be removed. When one or both the ovaries are removed it is called unilateral or bilateral oophorectomy .
